Project Description

The owners found the southwest facing site they’d been searching for in a great location for their retirement. They asked us to help them design a one story, contemporary, 2,500 SF, 3 bedroom house to enjoy 4 seasons on the coast of Maine. The owners were enamored by styles they visited in the Pacific Northwest, so keeping that in mind, we designed a house that fit the tight constraints of the cliff-like site while capturing incredible sea views from all of the living spaces. With the site’s steep slope and orientation, the lower level feels nothing like a basement.

As close to a net zero building as we could get, the R-Value of the walls and roof are nearly double the minimum standard. Triple pane windows from Germany provide the highest U-Value available in a window while providing much desired solar gain in the cold winter months. Minimal glass is used on the north side of the house. There is a back up wood stove for those occasional New England cloudy days.
